Rapper Yung Lean photographed by Max Ronnersjö

Max Ronnersjö has by now become a known name in the art and culture scene of Stockholm. Not only is he a multi-artist (he makes drawings, photographs and DJ:s etc.) but he also works closely with other artists in order to show and exhibit their works in the best possible way. I took a walk to his latest project – a gallery called Isbrytaren that is exhibiting many different contemporary artists. We sat down on the first floor that currently exhibits the work of Los Angeles-based artist Michael Manning.

In what way have you contributed to these exhibits?

Here in the Manning show, Jim (Thorell) and I have been working closely with him installing works and building the exhibition. I work like a technician around here, but I also work with guiding people and running the gallery. The gallery owner mostly works in London, so when he’s not here it’s my colleagues and I who run the whole thing. It kind of works like an artist run space.

For the group show Meet Your Maker (on the third floor) I have produced works as a part of the exhibiting artists. Then I have also helped painting the walls, hang the art and conversed with the other artists about presentation and so on. I have also work with PR-stuff, like inviting the media and stuff like that.

How often are you here?
The usual opening hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Then it’s also open by appointment. So by mailing or calling me you can book a time and I will guide you through the exhibitions.

For how long will this exhibition be shown here?

We held the opening of the exhibitions a couple of weeks ago and they will be shown, probably through the fall. The next exhibition will open in November.

Throughout the years, you have been working with many galleries, for example Revenue?

I have been studying art for a very long time in different schools, and through out this whole period I have been working a lot with building exhibitions. So not only have I made art but I have also been a part of other important things in the art industry. So for obvious reasons I have run many different galleries throughout the years, for example Revenue where I have done exhibitions and events. And another project that I had in Gothenburg that was called Martini Project which was also just a huge brewery space aswell, and there we worked with both young and etablished artists.

Tell us a little bit about your art that is currently exhibited here at Isbrytaren?
I have worked a lot with digitalization and to make art digitally and make art on the internet. I have shown these drawings before but this is kind of a developement since I have printed them in a different way; a very simple photo print on canvas. I like to call this type of art Gallerix or IKEA-art because of the reproductive feel that it has. It’s not like a ”unique piece of art”.

And the photo that I took with all those wine glasses has a lot to do with me working in the restaurant industry before and wanted to work with the image. So basically, it is an art and a skill to be able to hold that many wine glasses in your hand, and you can find an artistic value in an everyday practice. I wanted to work with the image I have of the stereotypical artist who drinks wine and is simply interested in wine and drawing beautiful women - Very Matisse and Picasso inspired.

And then we have the vacuum cleaner which is ready-made. I have worked with that one before also, I have shown a humidifier that blew steam and it has a function unlike for example Duchamp’s ready-made which worked more of a piece of art. It’s can be compared to, for example, if you exhibit a urinal that can also be used as a urinal. But then of course, I also very much like the aesthetic appearance of the vacuum and that it has a comic effect when it goes around and doesn’t really go well with the other stuff that are exhibited. But yeah. I love generic images, Stockphotos, things like that.

What relation do you have to Yung Lean and Sad Boys?

I met Sad Boys for the first time when I booked their first gig at Röda Sten in Gothenburg. Jonatan (Yung Lean) and Micke (Yung Gud) were staying at my place. I remember that they refused to sleep head to toe. Jonatan is very artistic and socially developed considering his age and he will go very far. I was with them on their first gigs, filmed them and stuff like that. We partied and hung out together a lot. I, together with the Revenue team, worked as their managers in the beginning. I currently don’t have a professional relation to them anymore. For me, they were very inspiring and what they did back then was unexpected and exciting.

What other artists are you inspired by?

Well, I like the works of Picasso, Duchamp, Reena Spaulings, Merlin Carpenter, Dena Yago, Timur Si-Qin… and Matisse of course.

Have you heard about Karl Holmqvist? (german-based, swedish artist)

Yes! He went to one of my exhibitons in Berlin once, in June. And when he showed up I was like ”YES!” and when I was in Berlin a couple of years ago I saw him in a bar and went up to him and said hi. He is such a based guy. If you say hello to him, he calls himself city names.

What international artist would you want to see a exhibition here in Stockholm with?

I would love to see a big exhibiton with Carsten Höller, that would have been fun.  I only saw a super tiny merry-go-round of him here in Sweden. And then of course, Zoe (Barcza) who did these video installations here on Isbrytaren. It would be nice to see her work in its own exhibition.

What are your future plans for Isbrytaren?

We don't work with plans hehe, no but seriously, we are going to have many more exhibitions to come!
